When the family of wealthy businessman Hugh Dixon is killed in an assassination attempt on African leader Winston Boyko, Dixon puts Spenser on the trail of the assassin, Paul, who describes himself as "a patriot", wanting to keep Africa for the whites, whom he says brought civilization to the country. But the real reason for the attempt on Boyko is of a much more mercenary nature.
