Cowley boy makes it big

Most parents would probably be horrified if their son grew up to be a vampire.

Not George and Pam Johnson. They're absolutely delighted. Their son, Geordie Johnson, was head vampire, Dracula, on a recent television series.

He also had a part in the Oscar winning movie 'The English Patient.'

These roles are just a couple of the highlights of Johnson's acting career which culminated in a Gemini Award October for best performance by an actor in a guest role in a dramatic series. Johnson, 47, won the award for an episode of 'The City.'

Johnson now lives in Toronto, but his story begins in Cowley.

He went to Livingstone School in Lundbreck. In high school, Johnson had a flair for drama and he and his friend Marcel Desjardin used to put together dramatic scenes which they would perform at Christmas concerts and such.

After graduating from high school in 1970, Johnson went to the University of Calgary where he received a fine arts degree.

He went out to the coast for a while before settling in Toronto where he spent many seasons acting on stage at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Ontario.

"He loves Shakespeare," says his mom Pam.

Johnson will be appearing next in the new series "Largo Winch" which will be aired in the new year.

In the series he plays a computer specialist named Kerensky. The roles and awards are rolling in now, but Pam said in the early days there were some tough times.

"When he was struggling he did construction work."

Pam said she and husband George never tried to dissuade their son from pursuing a career in acting.

"We both felt that he had it," she said.

And although someone might accuse her of a little maternal bias, Pam says she has watched her son act and thinks "he's great."
